FVMT Participates in Accelerate Program
Fox Valley Metal-Tech., Inc. has chosen to participate in Wisconsin Manufacturing Extension Partnership’s Accelerate program. The program has been designed by WMEP to improve manufacturing businesses in Wisconsin. DRS Technologies is the primary reason that Fox Valley Metal-Tech., Inc. took on the program. DRS Technologies chose FVMT as a key supplier to work with WMEP so they could obtain products from them earlier to support their contracts with customers. Accelerate is a more efficient, effective, and affordable use of resources and is meant to improve various aspects of any company that chooses to take it on. Phase I began with a day of thorough review, discussion and value stream mapping, followed by a day for developing a detailed plan to remove the process’s waste. Changes outlined in Phase I were implemented in Phase II. Many of the changes involved manufacturing process documentation and helping resolve technological issues. The impressive results have exceeded any expectation. There has been a 10% reduction cost, 64% reduction cycle time (a difference of 120 days instead of 300 days) and an addition of three welders to work on other projects. DRS benefitted greatly as their electrical enclosures project was selected as the project for FVMT to use on the Accelerate program.
Improvements have been made around the plant as well. John West, President of Fox Valley Metal-Tech., Inc. stated, “We improved communication with our clients and our subcontractors. For example, we clarified the government specification documents for our vendors by providing drawings and information specific to the part they supplied. This reduced confusion and sped up delivery times.” Fox Valley Metal-Tech., Inc. was able to apply the project’s techniques to other processes resulting in being able to offer better quality and better pricing. With the extra time they are also able to bid on more projects. Accelerate was a win-win situation for all.
